Only ten minutes from Perugia, in Umbria, this old Villa/ Castle overlooks the Subasio Mount and Assisi with wonderful views. The origins of the property get lost in history.
Once the residence of the noble, powerful family of the Gallena, this neo-gothic castle was restored and modified based on the architectural English style of that time and enriched by decorations of the most important artists of this area, such as Gualaccini, Tassi, Catalucci, and sculptors as Angeletti and Biscarini.
The castle also played host to several famous writers and artists of the past, including the Italian inventor G. Marconi and the poet and novelist Gabriele D’Annunzio.
The building is characterized by typical dovetail battlements and by a dominant, massive watching tower that covers a surface of about 60 square meters. The villa is on four floors and features several panoramic terraces. The 400 square meters basement, reachable from both the ground floor and the garden, is divided into some large wine cellars, storages, and box rooms.
The main entry still boasts the original, main door, which has been perfectly preserved and decorated with armorial bearings and stucco sculptures. This floor has a living surface of 570 square meters and is occupied by several living rooms and elegant sitting rooms.
From the ground level a gorgeous, stone staircase leads up to the first floor (560 square meters) where is a fantastic library with small bay windows, stucco decorations, and a frescoed ceiling. The top floor is undecorated as it was originally the servant’s quarters. At the top of the tower, there is a big terrace with stunning, far reaching views across the countryside and over the city of Perugia.
The villa is harmoniously surrounded by 6.65 ha of fenced parkland. Two gated entrances lead onto a brick and travertine driveway, lined with pine trees, flower beds, and wood areas.
The stables are included in the sale and are divided into three floors with a basement. The horse boxes are made of cast iron and wood and manufactured by the famous English firm Musgrave’s.
The property includes also some outbuildings for a total area of 310 square meters.
