Description

In the southern region of Chile, specifically in the Guaitecas Archipelago located in the XI Region of Aysén del General Carlos Ibañez del Campo, we find a unique and captivating landscape. This archipelago consists of around forty islands, each with its own distinct geography. One of these islands is Isla Garrao, situated at approximately 44°23’6′ south latitude and 73°43’57’ west longitude.

Covering an area of 6,850 hectares, with 82.3 km of shoreline and reaching a maximum height of approximately 450 meters, Isla Garrao boasts untouched natural beauty. The island is enveloped in dense forest that stretches from the coastline to the peaks of its hills, preserving its pristine condition.

The Guaitecas Archipelago experiences a humid temperate climate with distinct island characteristics. It receives a high amount of rainfall, ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 mm annually. Due to its geographical location, the archipelago benefits from abundant water resources, with variations throughout the year. The strong oceanic influence moderates the daily and annual temperature fluctuations.

The archipelago’s unique climate fosters a lush evergreen forest landscape, rich in diverse flora and vegetation. Along the coastal areas, you’ll find various types of lichens, ferns, and shrubs bearing edible fruits like raspberries, murtas, maquis, blackberries, and calafates. As you venture further inland, you’ll encounter endemic tree species such as lumas, lengas, ñirres, coihues, tepús, and mañíos. Notably, the cypress of the Guaitecas, an emblematic tree of these islands, thrives here. Beautiful flowers such as chilcos, manzanillas, clovers, coicopihues, and a variety of orchids add color and vibrancy to the landscape. Isla Garrao, like the other islands in the archipelago, is blessed with abundant vegetation and freshwater lagoons scattered across its surface.

*Fun History Fact*

The Guaitecas Archipelago was home to the Chonos people around eight thousand years ago. These skilled nomadic canoeists developed adaptive strategies that allowed them to thrive between the forest and the sea. They ingeniously crafted dalcas, wooden rafts measuring 7 to 8 meters in length, using cypress wood. These rafts served as their means of transportation and shelter as they navigated the intricate channels of the fjords and sourced food primarily from the Pacific Ocean. Their resourceful ways exemplify their deep connection with and reliance on the natural resources of the area.
